The Role of the USA in the India-Pakistan Conflict 1947-1971

This book analyzes U.S. policy toward India and Pakistan between 1947 and 1971 from the vantage point of relations between these two countries. State & Foreign Policy India,s Role in South Asia

In this book the author sets forth that, although conceptually and in appearance state and foreign policy appear fragmented and independent, in reality they are related, albeit dialectically, socially and politically. The central thesis, therefore, is that one understands the relationship between state and foreign policy from the standpoint of dialectics. It is, therefore, first and foremost a methodological exposition. The methodological application of dialectics, however, compels the author to examine the subject not only on the level of theoretical abstraction but also at the more important level of social reality. In the language of dialectics, this can be referred to as the concrete analysis of a concrete situation-the situation being the Indian state and its foreign policy, with particular reference to India,s role in South Asia. Three inter-related parts, therefore, remain central to this study: first, methodological; second, the understanding of the Indian state; and third, the understanding of India,s role in South Asia.

Chandabaji Versus Entrepreneurship

The book is a compilation of the seminar papers written by young, scholars of Bangladesh. It deals with some of the development problems of Bangladesh pertaining to the youth force, particularly the growing trend of Chandabaji against the backdrop of economic liberalisation. Chandabaji is a bengali term which means extortion, illegal toll collection and rent seeking. Both Entrepreneurship and Chandabaji involve risk and alacrity. Why are, then some youths resorting to the deviant path of Chandabaji, and not coming forward to take up the challenges of entrepreneurship? How is Chandabaji sustained in the society? What is the way out? How could the situation be corrected? These are the broader issues that are dealt with in this book.

Issues and Challenges Facing Bangladesh Foreign Policy

The collection of articles in this volume is the first attempt to analyze foreign policy issues facing Bangladesh. The handful of books and monographs published so far on the topic primarily concentrate on our bilateral of multilateral external relations. There have been very little systematic academic discussions on Bangladesh foreign policy, notwithstanding the titles of those works. A survey of the writings over the years on the broad topic of foreign policy not only indicates conceptual confusion regarding these two terms, but the treatment of the subject to the extent discernible has also been quite superficial. No serious attempt has been made so far to examine the foreign policy issues which directly or indirectly or indirectly impinge on Bangladesh,s national interests and pose a challenge to foreign policy formulation; it is therefore imperative that these issues and challenges environmental security, India doctrine, aid versus trade, co-riparian rights, maritime boundary delimitation, to name a few find proper public articulation before there can be intelligent public input in the foreign policy process.

Intellectual Property Rights and Foreign Direct

Given a different structure of demand for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection under the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) mandate (geared toward the developing world to comply with the minimum protection criterion as opposed to a too stringent and weak IPR system, especially using the Agreement,s flexibilities for implementing TRIPS considering a developing country,s legal framework and other socio-economic conditions for attracting FDI), this research essay has investigated how an adequate IPR protection mechanism under the framework of TRIPS can augment FDI from a developing country,s perspective.< br />.< br /> The basic theme advanced throughout this essay is that developed countries should exercise greater tolerance and flexibility to help developing countries comply with the TRIPS mandate of adequate IPR protection toward the generation of greater FDI in the emerging economies, and help reach a common platform on global IPR protection, which would be beneficial for both parties, in the long-term. < br />.< br /> In this context, developed countries should extend their cooperation by means of monetary and technical assistance and offer greater flexibility to help developing countries reform their domestic IPR regimes, which include (a) building a consensus for IPR reform (b) administration and judicial reform (c) administration and enforcement of IPR so that developed countries feel more secure to invest in developing countries, which could potentially increase foreign investment.

Diplomacy and Statecraft

The ability to practice diplomacy and to manage relationships with relevant actors (i.e. states, international organizations, NGOs and multinational corporations) in the international arena is one of the defining elements of a modern state. Diplomacy has been practiced in different parts of the world since ancient times when diplomats were exchanged among nations to develop and maintain relationships and to undertake specific negotiations towards achieving strategic goals.
The 21st century is now more than a decade old, and the environment in which diplomacy takes placeis dynamic and rapidly changing. The world system has been convulsed severely several times since the end of the 1980s. First, the collapse of the socialist system in the early 1990s scrambled the power map of the world and set in motion US international ascendancy and a new phase of globalization and democratization. It also meant eruption of violence and foreign intervention from time to time in the area comprising the former Soviet Union. Second, the barbaric attacks on the United States by some terrorists in September 2001 in the name of Islam added new and unexpected dimensions to international diplomatic activities, to security concerns, to trade negotiations, to alliance formation, and to the sharing of knowledge and innovation. The third fundamental change to diplomacy was brought about by the recent global recession, starting from the US and then engulfing Europe and other parts of the world. Fourthly, the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have witnessed the growth of international law, particularly those relating to safeguarding human rights, preserving the environment, stopping the proliferation of nuclear weapons and addressing pressing security concerns. These have also defined the new limits of diplomacy. Finally, the cataclysmic changes that are now going on in the Arab World are enhancing democracy and human rights in some parts, indeed at a high cost, but at the same time reshaping the existing equations that the Middle East and North Africa enjoy among themselves and with the rest of the world.
Diplomacy and Statecraft third edition provides an introduction to the theory and practice of modern diplomacy, drawing on the experience of the major powers with a particular focus on Western diplomacy and foreign policy, while also examining examples from Asia and elsewhere. It contains 12 chapters and 16 case studies.

Bangladesh-India Relations: Security Perspectives

The spectre of terrorism has been haunting the relationship between Bangladesh and India for a long time. Bangladesh and India have faced a number of terrorist attacks with cross-border security implications in the face of dramatic rise in terrorist activities in recent years. The prime target of the terrorists is to undermine the democratic institutions and secular culture of these two countries as well as to create severe hindrances in the process of economic development. Given the nature of threats emanating from terrorism, cooperation on combating terrorism between Bangladesh and India has become imperative. This volume has made sincere efforts in exploring the security perspectives of Bangladesh and India with the focus on terrorism. It has also attempted to understand the nature of the security issues concerning the two countries.
The book will be invaluable to the students of history, political science, security studies and international relations. This volume will also generate insights for the policy makers and the other stakeholders who wish to understand the security perspectives of Bangladesh and India.

The Jamdani Revolution Politics, Personalities and Civil Society in Bangladesh 1989-1992

The Jamdtith Revolution is the first book to be published of an Indian envoy`s diaries during a diplomatic posting. His time in Bangladesh marked the first-ever civil society overthrow of a military-backed regime in South Asia and only the second relatively bloodless revolution in the whole of Asia. The political parties that brought down General Ershad in 1990 found it impossible to sink their differences and establish democratic institutions; a problem that continues to this day in this space of three years, there were three presidents in Bangladesh and four Prime Ministers in India, and bilateral issues between India and Bangladesh were intensely politicized on both sides of the border.
The Jamdani Revolution throws candid light on the day-to-day activities of an Indian envoy, his actions with and without instructions from New Delhi, and the frustrations with headquarters that characterize the experience of every ambassador. The author narrates his reactions to communal riots, coup rumours, calumnies in the press, the cyclone of 1991, amnesia about the Liberation War, and the neglect of Bangladesh`s Hindu and Buddhist pre-Islamic history. He records his impressions of politicians in India and Bangladesh, and the comic and sad incidents that enlivened his assignment.
